7th ITB Hospitality Day: HR panel revealed gap between industry and demand

Berlin (April 13, 2012). Eager, career-hungry junior hoteliers challenged the participants of the talk "The War for Talent: The Mass Exodus from the Hotel Industry" with their questions at the end. The discussion at the 7th "ITB Hospitality Day" revealed: in order to stop the universally feared mass exodus from the hotel industry, more things would have to change as are obvious right now. However, the experts recommended the junior staff the customary mixture of studies and practice, extended by economic knowledge and international experience. It still remained unclear, whether the graduates of hotel management schools and technical universities should remain exclusively loyal to the industry.

"ITB Hospitality Day" with the fathers & sons of Dusit Hotels & Motel One

Berlin (March 23, 2012). Today in the hotel industry, children do not particularly step in the footprints of their parents happily. They are primarily very well trained and sense more economically attractive opportunities in other industries. At the 7th "ITB Hospitality Day" at the ITB, Maria Puetz-Willems dug in deeply with two who still want to begin the inheritance of their fathers. Their fathers sat beside them and listened carefully to what the juniors think about them and the companies: Among the guests were Dieter and Daniel Mueller from Motel One as well as Chanin and Siradej Donavanik of Dusit Hotels. ITB distribution panel: Which portals will fall by the wayside?

Berlin (March 16, 2012). "Fewer providers with more power?" The slogan of the distribution panel at ITB Berlin's 7th "ITB Hospitality Day" was also the answer: a consolidation process is going on among online travel agents (OTAs) that will leave behind several portals. Online distribution is becoming more and more complex. New portals or niche business models ensure an increasing number of newcomers. At the same time, the giants are preparing a counterstrike.

7th ITB Hospitality Day on HR: Mass exodus from the hotel industry

Berlin (February 24, 2012). The demographic statistics have reliably forecasted it for many years: The service industries in particular will struggle with the lack of the younger generation. At the same time, the demands for a more academic, younger generation are piling up because the hotel industry is becoming increasingly more complicated. Hotels today can no longer be directed without knowledge of business economics. Nevertheless, is the young manager still to master the trade? All types of courses of studies simply spring from the ground. What is serious? And how can the industry ultimately inspire the young people? The statistics attest to the contrary here: A sort of "Mass Exodus" from the hotel industry. Well-known experts discuss this at the "ITB Hospitality Day" during ITB Berlin on March 8.

Berlin (February 10, 2012). Political riots, crises, attacks. How do hotels protect their guests? This question has not only been posed since the "Arabian Spring". Hotels have already repeatedly been the target of attacks or served as the setting for determinant political talks. And so, the subject is not new for hoteliers, but it has gained another dimension. 2nd World Tourism Forum Lucerne discussed global sustainability Lucerne (April 22, 2011). The path to a sustained world is still broad, very broad. The world still exists in contradictions: The rich west thinks about it, but does not want to pay for it. "Emerging markets" ask only for material prosperity and up to now, the discussion there about "sustainability" takes place only with a few heads of the uppermost hierarchy. On the one hand, the first "green" hotels and tourism concepts are sprouting up and on the other hand, there are always new low-cost airlines originating that seek only growth. And the desire for global travel rises and rises … In closing, these were the great contradictions in sustainability development that got stuck in the minds of the approximately 200 participants of the 2nd World Tourism Forum Lucerne (WTF) last week. And the knowledge that even the executives who were present in Lucerne cannot (still) change very much. Concrete knowledge or even decisions were missing in the end. But there were also too few potent decision makers present.

Berlin (April 1, 2011). Within the European hotel landscape, smaller family businesses still dominate. However, their destiny is a hot topic in view of the advancement of the hotel chain industry in the budget and middle classes. Branch representatives send an urgent reminder within the middle class for changes and innovation as well as early action regarding succession arrangements. With the 6th "ITB Hospitality Day", the hotel conference at the Berlin ITB, experts on the scene discussed the future of the family businesses under the title "The End for Mom-and-Pops?"

Low budget & hostels ITB panel: low price, less service is well accepted Berlin (March 25, 2011). Their companies were the result of a situation full of frustration, but it opened their eyes to the niche: the founders of the Malaysian Tune Hotels, A&O Hotels & Hostels in Berlin and hostelsclub.com, an online distribution platform from Venice, seized their chance. Within ten years, they have managed to play a strategic role in the hardly structured hostel and low budget hotel market. During the panel discussion titled “Low Budget Hotel & Hostels: A Good Night’s Sleep for Peanuts?” at the 6th ITB Hospitality Day at ITB Berlin two weeks ago, they explained the products and philosophies which have helped them establish themselves successfully worldwide. A summary.

Whilst Reto Wittwer, President and CEO of Kempinski Hotels & Resorts presented his skills as luxury hotel manager with clear emotion, Christian Windfuhr of Grand City explained the strategy of his company - with the core aim of increasing real estate values - with utmost objectivity. Both managers embody the very different approaches of their companies, which in turn reflect the two major models employed today by the hotel sector across the globe. Brand values or real estate investments: Wittwer and Windfuhr gave away some interesting details.

6th ITB Hospitality Day with TripAdvisor, HolidayCheck, Facebook and Google Berlin (February 25, 2011). Are they now friends for life? Or rather enemies? Social media and hotel review platforms are currently experiencing a hype. The hotel industry is looking more and more critically: Since both partners develop for the branch, they are not the best friend whom one can trust blindly. The speed at which TripAdvisor, HolidayCheck, Facebook and Google are currently developing and linking up can be absolutely frightening. Therefore, the discussion regarding Social Media & Hotel Review Platforms - Friends for Life?" during the ITB Hotel Conference at the "ITB Hospitality Day", on Thursday, 10 March, 2011 will certainly be one of the most interesting discussions altogether.

6th ITB Hospitality Day: Private hotels without successor – Chains urging

Berlin (February 11, 2011). This mainly concerns Western Europe: tens of thousands of hotels are looking for a successor. Because of this, even successful hotels are facing the "The End for Mom-and-Pops?". Or not? The question mark behind the title of the panel discussion at the "ITB Hospitality Day" in Berlin queries an unsuccessful transition. However, the panelists do not delude themselves: chain hotels are striving for secondary and tertiary destinations, mainly via franchise brands in the low-budget segment. German and Swiss hoteliers face this issue. The hotel conference at ITB Berlin will take place for the sixth time this year: again, hospitalityInside.com will be acting as the event’s media partner and will report about this discussion here afterwards.

ITB Asia and Singapore Hotels highlight new challenges

Singapore (November 5, 2010). Exhibitors in Asia focused strongly on MICE business as conferences and incentives generate a higher yield than package-deals do, the organisers of the ITB Asia, Messe Berlin (Singapore), noted this year. However, meeting business remains volatile, especially in the luxury segment, as one discussion during the 3rd ITB Asia two weeks ago revealed. "Today we negotiate expectations," one expert described from the podium. Off stage, new hotels fan new expectations and competition. The new Marina Bay Sands complex in Singapore is a symbol here. Its three towers and 2,500 rooms form an event and guest factory from which both established and new hotels alike would like to profit.

3rd ITB Asia: trade fair shows extremes and opportunities in the mega market

Singapore (October 29, 2010). After a six-percent increase in the number of exhibitors, the 3rd ITB Asia closed with a plus of visitor numbers too: This year, there were 6,606 visitors - 7.4% more than the previous year. These figures show that the ITB Asia in Singapore is slowly being accepted as a travel trade fair in the Far East. This year's additional programmes – the expert panels – seemed to be in touch with the times with the new mixture. The B2B trade fair is growing; however, it is still small compared to the ITB Berlin and therefore it is quite easy to become familiar with the trends in Asia very quickly. At the luxury meetings there are similar trends recognisable but glaring differences in technology trends. In the Asian mega market, where many touristic and business areas have not been developed yet, speed is dominating and not quality.

"Healthcare meets Tourism": Concept decides real estate type

Munich (July 16, 2010). The boundaries marking the difference between a hotel offering medical services, private clinic offering hotel services and a public clinic with hospitality services are fluid. The greater the focus on medical services, the more expensive the investment. Siemens' Hospitality One identified eight different categories of medical and hospitality combination in one study which was cited at the "Healthcare meets Tourism" symposium in Munich two weeks ago. Case studies conducted by two successful health hotels showed how the offer must be shaped in this young niche. Investors remain cautious though: The market is still not transparent enough, though the potential is meanwhile huge.

David Bosshart, CEO of the Gottlieb Dudweiler Institute (GDI) in Zurich, and Robert Thiemann, Editor in Chief of the design magazine "Frame" in Amsterdam, attempted to describe the new ways of thinking whilst speaking at the Design Hotels "Future Forum" in Berlin. "Health Care meets Tourism" workshop: Cure destinations are perfect Munich (July 9, 2010). The potential is tremendous but where are the investors? Health properties are promising reliable and stable yields; however, the scepticism concerning this new market segment remains high. One reason for this are lacking definitions and missing elaborate concepts, which can be focused either on tourism and guests or on hospitals and patients. Predestined for the establishment of health properties are, among others, health resorts and therapeutic spas. However, they have to do image work and raise awareness as well, just like the advocates of health properties. But the demographic development is playing into their hands in the meantime. The first workshop of the leading Austrian tourism consultancy Kohl & Partner in Germany attracted about 50 interested people from various industries last Monday. In the Hilton Munich Park, a lively discussion about the mixing of destinations and real estate, health and medical tourism took place. hospitalityInside.com was media partner of this premiere.

ITB Hospitality Day: Innovation panel pleading a mental restart Berlin (March 26, 2010). Secondly, and especially in the physical world of the hotel environment, the effect of new designs, materials and building techniques would be considered of importance with respect to innovation. It is therefore with some credit and not a little bit of surprise that the panel discussing “Innovation: The prescription for bland hotels” at this year’s 5th "ITB Hospitality Day" during ITB Berlin barely touched on these topics preferring to focus more on the ‘software’ - the people that bring ideas to the business.

Berlin (January 29, 2010). The economic crisis, just like long-changing travel behaviour, is forcing the hotel industry to reinvent itself and become more innovative. 5th ITB Hospitality Day at ITB 2010 - CEO and innovation panel

Berlin (December 18, 2009). The record attendance of over 12,000 participants in 2009 proved that the "ITB Berlin Convention" was able to further extend its lead as the leading travel industry think tank. With the world's largest tourism fair as its backbone, the Convention has developed into an attractive platform for promoting dialogue in the international tourism sector. From 10 to 12 March 2010 more than 200 leading speakers and panel guests from science, politics and with practical experience will present topics and discuss the future of travel at around 100 events. Admission is free for all trade visitors. For the fifth time, also the hotel industry will have its own platform: Again, the "ITB Hospitality Day" picks up top topics, e.g. discussions about climate challenges, budget hotels, mobile devices and staff payments. A panel about innovation will create recipes against boring hotels, and the second CEO panel again makes top leader speak about their strategies. For the fifth time, hospitalityInside is media partner of the ITB Hospitality Day, and editor in chief Maria Puetz-Willems arranged the panels.

With the 2nd ITB Asia in Singapore, MICE moves into focus Singapore/Berlin (November 6, 2009). "Yes, it was right to start up the ITB Asia." Dr Martin Buck, Director of Messe Berlin (Singapore) doesn't regret the expensive decision to create an Asian offshoot of the world's biggest tourism trade fair. The second time the event took place, this time in the Singapore Suntec Convention Centre, just two weeks ago, management were able to show good results in spite of the economic crisis. On closer inspection though, movements on the market are reflected - as they are everywhere. The hotel industry was accordingly less well represented. Those taking part, however, praised the high quality of the meetings. In 2010, the trade fair organisers intend to return to growth.

Enough capital but no financing - 7th IHC in Venice Venice (October 30, 2009). On the market, there is still enough capital and there are many excellent operators, but there are no banks willing to finance. Apparently, they form the "bottleneck" in most European states. At the 7th International Hotel Conference (IHC) in Venice last week, the panel discussions emphasised the key note of the statements made at the Expo Real in Munich before. Moreover, a discussion revealed the growing gap between real hoteliers who are able to do the maths (Moevenpick), and managers that have mutated pure controllers (Hilton). The bankers are only asking for one thing: collateral. According to some financial experts, the loss of value with respect to hotel real estate will continue until the middle of 2010. Until then, there are many bargains on the market. The mixture of the 300 participants of the conference reflected the changed economic situation too: For the first time, the consultants dominated the IHC. Only a couple of bankers and financiers had the courage to come to Venice, renowned chains, such as Starwood Hotels or Rezidor - long-year sponsors - were missing entirely.

Impressions from Expo Real 2009 – An exploration through hospitality Munich (October 9, 2009). Rationality and quality are back. The financial and economic crisis also has positive effects, as could be seen at Expo Real, Europe's leading commercial real estate fair, this week. The exhibition halls were well filled despite the crisis and some (city) stands made visitors marvel just at their size. Russian and Arabian exhibitors were obviously missing. There was general consent about the desire for content and clues in the current situation. Therefore, the Expo Real forums were well frequented. The "Hospitality Industry Dialogue" hotel conference was also happy about well-attended panel discussions, and the first networking event staged by hospitalityInside and Expo Real on Monday evening was subsequently a great success. The sign of the times points to those showing seriousness, competence and endurance. The only drop of bitterness: the investment speed has slowed down substantially – in the hospitality industry, too.

October 5: Expo Real, Hospitality Industry Dialogue and Bricks & Brains Munich (September 18, 2009). Europe's commercial real estate fair Expo Real can expect around 1,600 exhibitors from 34 countries, according to the present status of registrations. They will meet from 5 to 7 October 2009 in Munich. "Given the difficult economic situation in the sector, this is a very pleasing result. The majority of our long-standing exhibitors have remained faithful to the fair," said Eugen Egetenmeir, a member of the Management Board of Messe München. The Expo Real takes place for the 12th time offering various forums and congresses with lots of intense discussions right from the first day. Here, the hotel industry has had its fixed place for many years - at the "Hospitality Industry Dialogue" (HID) in the course of the "Special Real Estate Forum". Maria Puetz-Willems, Editor in Chief of hospitalityInside.com, arranged the programme for the second time. After the conference and trade fair, hospitalityInside and the Expo Real will host "Bricks & Brains", the first networking event for hospitality insiders.

ITB Asia and Web In Travel to talk about the trend in online travel Singapore (September 4, 2009). The year 2009 is being tipped as the ‘Year of the Deal’ when online travel in Asia will come into its own. Online travel agencies operating in the region are still reporting growth in transaction volumes albeit yields are down. Low cost carriers are expanding and aggressively promoting cheap fares on their websites. Hotel groups are also introducing online sales, group-wide discounts and value offers on their websites. It is against this background that Web In Travel (WIT) 2009 will be held in partnership with ITB Asia, October 20-23 at the Suntec Singapore Exhibition & Convention Centre.

Dear Insiders, top managers from the Accor headquarters in Paris giving straight answers to German journalists is a quite a seldom occurrence. This week, COO Yann Caillère promised that Accor wanted to open itself more to the German market. Insiders should remember this sentence! For my part, I reminded him that Accor`s second largest market outside France would welcome an open explanation of the strategy and personnel decisions being taken. The COO certainly gave an interesting and detailed insight into the way Accor is currently juggling contracts and real estate. The next two weeks will presumably also be a balancing act. Until the VAT reduction on overnight stays becomes law in Germany hotels will be treading carefully. Details. At the recent investment conference in St. Petersburg, different approaches to dealing with real estate and investors became clear. The crisis has strengthened each party`s standpoint. How nice it is then when a hotel belongs to a king. The legendary La Mamounia in Marrakech has opened its doors again, with much pomp and circumstance. And among today`s smaller news: The hotel industry`s reaction to the Swiss minaret decision, Sheikh Al Jaber finally becomes hotelier in Austria and in Gstaad, a renowned director couple must clear their desks as the owner falls victim to the economic crisis.
