The cloud computing mega trend mainly brings benefits for medium caps Neuss (October 21, 2011). It is another bright idea of US marketeers. The term "cloud computing" is so visually expressive that anybody dealing with information technology of any kind immediately gets an impression of it. And it cannot be seriously translated either. Cloud computing also implies “software as a service”, SaaS for short, which actually means: software is provided via web services.

MICROS-Fidelio follows new consumer types Neuss (June 3, 2011). One of the many difficult tasks of general managers is to identify their target groups with maximum precision. According to latest findings, classic parameters such as age, social status, occupation, and hobbies are only useful for a sentimental look back. But when looking at the present and the future, they lead astray. A fundamental change of values has created new markets for new consumer types in the meantime.

First "Green Building Certificate" for Austrian Hotel with help from Siemens Munich (March 25, 2011) With utilities costs on the rise, hotel energy efficiency initiatives are now well understood to make business sense. Not surprising given that energy represents the single fastest-growing operating cost in the hospitality industry, accounting for between 3% and 6% of total running costs. From energy-efficient components to building management systems, technology available today is already proven to help curb energy consumption significantly – as demonstrated in the case study below, presenting Hotel Wende in Austria, a prime example of how successful sustainability improvements can be. The challenges for the hospitality industry, however, in the context of existing and upcoming policies on emission caps, taxation and trade, will be not just be technological but managerial too – starting with staff engagement and expanding to hotel guests.

Taking part is a must – but you decide “how” says MICROS-Fidelio Neuss (February 25, 2011). Adding friends, publishing videos, sharing links, reading evaluations – this is what social media are about, and even much more. It means taking part actively in world affairs, switching your position from a passive reader to an active creator, from a customer to a critic forming opinions.

Siemens: Lighting in hotels creates experiences and meets sustainability goals Munich (December 17, 2010). Today’s hospitality market is more than simply providing rooms to guests. In order to stand out in such a crowded market, hotels must offer their guests unique accommodation adventures with innovative concepts and one-of-a-kind experiences. Hoteliers are exploring new and creative ways to create interesting and dynamic environments for their guests, which often involves an increased use of multi-media technologies. Hotels are also faced with the challenge of sustainability and the realities of running a business. Innovations, technologies and design are the drivers of success in today’s hotel business. Increased competition combined with rising operational costs, are driving hoteliers to invest in revenue-generating assets, but also in cost-saving devices. One way hotels are achieving both goals is through the use of creative lighting design. Today’s advanced lighting technologies can create dramatic effects and significantly influence the look and feel of a room at a fraction of the energy costs incurred with traditional lighting technologies.

Hotels also have to handle the increasing flood of paper Neuss (October 22, 2010). Everybody knows how nerve-racking the search for an important receipt can be. Yesterday it was on top of the pile and now it has disappeared. Or the troublesome, time-consuming search for the urgently needed copy of an invoice, which has not been filed away in the folder it should be in. And we all know that searching for missing documents can be a long and tedious process.

New functions available for the Serenata CRM solution Munich (September 17, 2010). Compared to other industries, hotels still make little use of their existing customer data for maintaining and organizing their customer relations in a purposeful manner. Customer Relationship Management in the hospitality industry still lags far behind its possibilities. Devising a well-targeted guest communication is the basis for implementing and caring for sustainable customer loyalty. This is where the CRM and e-Marketing products of Serenata IntraWare GmbH come in.

In early 2010, the Gala Spa Award followed, an award for the most innovative spa concept. The Lefay Resort has a small but fine target group that wants to concentrate on itself secluded from the rest of the world.

Integrated Yield Management Neuss (June 18, 2010). Yield Management has been practised for quite a while. It was born in the 1980s and stems from the aviation industry, as this particular sector had to cope with excess capacities quite early. They were looking for solutions in order to cope with the strong competition by carrying out rate and demand analyses. During the mid-nineties, competition grew fierce in the hospitality industry as well, and parallels quickly became obvious. This article explains the principles of Yield Management and introduces the new OPERA Revenue Management System (ORMS) by MICROS-Fidelio, the only solution integrated in a Property Management System (PMS) so far.

Still in its infancy in the hotel industry, already widespread in other sectors Munich (June 11, 2010). Large US chains such as Hilton, Marriott or InterContinental Group of Hotels are the trailblazers when it comes to outsourcing in the hotel industry. They are outsourcing more and more of their IT – just particular areas or sometimes entire operations – or are asking IT specialists to reorganize their activities and run them completely. The success of these endeavors ultimately depends on finding the correct strategy, but picking the right path among the many often seemingly attractive options is often extremely difficult. Christopher Stein from Siemens IT Solutions and Services helps you navigate through the outsourcing jungle.

hotelbau magazine: Trade informations for all involved in special real estate Merching (April 30,2010). "Another hotel magazine?" That is what many will probably be thinking now. There are indeed more than enough expert magazines dealing with hotel management. Both construction and real estate only play a secondary role in this title, if at all. The hotelbau expert magazine, which came into being three years ago, pursues a different approach. It is not a typical hotel magazine, but a real estate magazine dealing with hotels as a special type of real estate.

Siemens One launches a unique solution for monitoring all hotel workflows Munich/Zug (February 19, 2010). In which empty room is the air-conditioning running full blast? Which guest requests are still pending? In which room is the smoke detector reporting dangerous smoke accumulation? In a hotel, it is a real challenge to keep an eye on the big picture. After all, many processes run simultaneously or are dependent on each other – in the front of the house as well as in the back. The hotel industry as a whole is facing enormous challenges and must satisfy these specific daily requirements in keeping with current regulations and the latest trends – which means integrating environmental compatibility, security, customer proximity and cost efficiency into routine operations. The logical conclusion is that all relevant processes in the functional areas must be kept fully up to date. The key is information, combined with easy-to-understand and manageable information monitoring. In 2010, Siemens One Hospitality will launch an Integrated Cockpit Solution, a new dimension in innovation. Initial information will be provided at ITB Berlin in early March.

MICROS-Fidelio to optimise communication of the "millenials" Neuss (February 5, 2010). The current and global IT trends are also reflected in the hospitality sector, bearing English names suitable for global use: mobility, outsourcing, virtualisation, software as a service (SaaS), green IT, security and technology for cost reduction and improved performance. All these new developments have one thing in common: they adjust better to the needs of mobile people, relieve companies of administrational tasks, make costs calculable and enable problems to be solved quickly. MICROS-Fidelio has adapted to these developments as well. In the future, the IT specialist will help its customers even more in terms of communicating with their customers.

Companies without proper controlling systems risk losing a lot (Neuss, September 2009). The question as to what a product really costs and what its profit margin will be for a certain sales volume will be particularly important in the future. Times in which controlling systems and Food & Beverage (F&B) controllers were "saved" are well and truly over. It will become increasingly important to draw the right products from the right supplier at optimal cost and time. Storage costs must be kept down and quality must be maintained. Control is what is needed - and this is done best with a professional and modular controlling system. MICROS-Fidelio provides support for inventories, recipes, analyses and statistics with its Materials Control (MC) system as well as improving F&B results.
